The annual festival of Onam, known for its colourful celebrations and delicious traditional cuisine, is celebrated across Kerala in the month of Chingam, as per the Malayalam calendar. The Onam celebrations correspond to August-September on the Gregorian calendar.
The much-awaited festival symbolises demon king Mahabali’s homecoming. The 10-day festival is celebrated with traditional fervour as people decorate their houses and streets to welcome King Mahabali. Onam Sadhya, a traditional vegetarian spread of more than 20 dishes, also marks the celebrations of the festival.
As per Hindu mythology, King Mahabali conquered the gods and ruled the three worlds. Although he was a demon king, Mahabali was a benevolent ruler and an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. This made the gods insecure and they pleaded with Lord Vishnu to help them. Lord Vishnu took the form of Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin, and asked for three feet of land. He tricked Mahabali into donating all the land on Earth and all his material possessions.
In his Vamana incarnation, Lord Vishnu pushed the demon king into the netherworld, or Patal, with his third feet. However, Lord Vishnu was pleased by Mahabali’s unwavering devotion and allowed the king to return to earth and visit his kingdom once a year.
Hence, every year Kerala marks Onam to observe Mahabali’s homecoming. This year the 10-day festivities will be held from September 6 to September 15.
Here’s what the 10 days of Onam represent:
1. Atham: This day marks the beginning of the Onam celebrations. People offer morning prayers to the Vamana incarnation of Lord Vishnu and decorate their homes with yellow flowers, known as Pookkalam, (floral Rangoli). The residents also place the idols of Vamana and King Mahabali at home to mark the beginning of Onam celebrations.
2. Chithira: The second day of Onam is marked by cleaning the houses. People also visit nearby temples and begin shopping for Onam.
3. Chodhi: Many people buy clothes, jewellery and gifts for their families and relatives on this day. Often, men are seen wearing Mundu, while girls choose to go for Pattu Pavada and women opt for traditional saree, known as Kasavu. Homes are also decorated with lamps and colourful Pookalam.
4. Vishakam: The fourth day is marked with the preparations for Onam Sadhya. People stock their homes with their first harvest of the season. Traditional dance performances like Thiruvathirakali and Kathakali are also organised at many places.
5. Anizham: The Vallamkali boat race (also called the snake boat race) is held on the Pamba River in Pathanamthitta.
6. Thriketta: On the sixth day, people visit their ancestral homes, offer more gifts to each other and visit temples.
7. Moolam: Temples start offering special sadhyas (feasts). Also, there are multiple other celebrations.
8. Pooradam: On the eighth day, the idols of Vamana and King Mahabali are made with clay and placed in the centre of Pookalam. Another layer of flowers is added to the Pookalam decoration by people.
9. Uthradam: The festivities begin on a huge scale as people prepare traditional meals with fruits and vegetables.
10. Thiruvonam: On the final day, it is believed that King Mahabali visits the state. Onam Sadhya is prepared and served on this occasion as people also paint the main door of the house with rice flour batter to welcome King Mahabali.
